This small French viola came into the shop today getting a make over. The first thing I noticed is the tailpiece was way too long. The viola sounded very muted and not very responsive and quite sluggish.
4 years ago when I first made the first generation of violin tailpiece from carbon fiber, I accidentally made it too long and did not fit the typical violin at 354mm well. I scrapped the mould and made a new shorter version for the violin and kept 4 of these extra long violin tailpieces just for memory sake.
4 years later this beautiful 15” viola came in and this tailpiece was exactly what it needed. Luckily I saved it and found it, the viola is now happy, quick response, rings lot more even for a little guy. ... See MoreSee Less
